African black soap for hair: insights? Advice? Experience?

The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards - Powered by vBulletin

Hi LHC members! I'm still on my no poo quest and I'm curious about African black soap. I've heard people use african black soap to wash their hair. I'd like to try Alaffia Liquid African Black Soap (Unscented) or Inesscents Liquid African Black Soap (Unscented). Has anyone tried it? Any pros/cons? How should I use it (dilute, add oils, etc)? Any opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you need oils on shaved or close hair cut?

I have been keeping my hair real short, but I'm not just growing it out. It's almost bald, but I have tiny hairs popping up. lol. I'm African American, so I don't know if that changes things or not, but do I really need to put anything on my scalp at this stage? I know some ppl say to oil it. Right now, I'm using a sulfur mix (castor oil, argan oil, and grapeseed oil, and sulfur). I want my hair to grow that's why I'm using it. Should I wait to use it until my hair is long enough or does it matter. I don't want to do anything to inhibit my growth. TIA
I really don't think it would be needed now.
Your hair is SO short that your natural oil, that your scalp produces, is enough.

Are you using the sulfur mix as a treatment or do you keep it on your scalp until you wash/for days maybe?
I don't know if it would inhibit your growth if you'd keep it on for days. It might really help. It might indeed inhibit growth. Everyone is different.
But I think I would use it as a treatment only (like 3 times a week for a few hours).

Thanks, Kiwiwi. Yes, I keep the sulfur on until wash days. My hair is growing nicely, but I don't want to oil my scalp down, if I don't need it. I'm still learning all about natural oils. So, thanks for the information. Any other information will be accepted.
You might consider allowing sebum production to regulate naturally. Since your hair is so short, this would be an ideal time to begin a product-free routine. You'll see what your hair is really like and discover its natural beauty.
It depends on what benefit you are looking for from the oil. Your hair won't need the oils yet as they are mostly for protection and being very short your sebum would be enough. However as you are using an oil with sulphur in it i assume you are looking for scalp benefits and to encourage growth. For that i'd say oiling it now is a great idea.
One of the benefits of having short hair is your natural sebum moisturises your hair as nature intended, with longer hair it needs a little help by using other oils as the sebum finds it harder to reach the ends. Your own sebum will not only moisturise but will also protect your hair from envionmental damage plus its free!

Enjoy your hair whilst its fairly cheap to maintain, your hair is probably way healthier than a lot of us longer hairs, hair, even oils which are close to human sebum will never make up for the real deal.

As long as you treat it kindly; minimum heat ect your hair should grow to be a healthy future long hair!

Chloe, yes, I was using the sulfur as a growth aide, but I'm going to just going to keep my scalp naked and take the ladies advice and just let my natural sebum moisturize my hair or scalp.
Oil can be used to moisturise the length of the hair OR to assist with growth. The massaging of the oils into your scalp is most beneficial as a growth stimulant (increasing blood flow and nutrient uptake) and castor oil is great as an antibacterial and antifungal on your hair follicle which is still there regardless of the length of your hair shaft. So I'd "go for it" with those oils!

Ohh and I am trying really hard not to get jealous right now I started my hair journey with damaged hair, but WOW - I could only imagine how incredible it would have been to start fresh, from scratch!

cones

The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards - Powered by vBulletin

hi im sure this has been answered a thousand times, but i cant seem to find the articles section..

i have been using no cones condish in my co washing and it has been nice...my hair is past waist now when before i could only grow it to bsl, yesterday i used a coney condish and i must say i miss the silkyness i get from cones...so why where cones bad again? was it they build up and you have to clarify every so often and they coat the hair and hide damage?

I have used cones for years and never clarified,it makes my hip length hair slippery so it doesn't tangle,I have never had any sort of problem with it.
Cones are not a bad thing for hair, sure you need to clarify a little more often but they are brilliant at protecting the hair. I go by the rule, if it makes my hair feel and look nice its worth using! Enjoy your cones guilt free, my hair loves them too!
It's an individual thing. Some people find that cones weight their hair down making it limp and harder to manage. Some people find that their hair is more tangle-prone with cones. not using cones made my hair tangle to the point where it was ripping itself from my scalp. There's nothing inherently evil about cones, just make sure to watch for build-up and clarify when necessary. I never wash without them. It's the only thing that keeps my classic length baby-fine hair manageable.

yay thanks for all your answers..i really love my hair when its coney..its all smooth, shiny and silky..it doesnt tangle or have any adverse affects.....can you use oil with cones? i like mineral and jojoba oil

For some people, it's a texture thing (being weighed down, limp, even tangly or plastic feeling), others its a buildup thing and they don't want to clarify too often.

My hair is far more voluminous on a no-cone routine and it holds a curl better without cones. However, I've gone back to cones for the time being and I haven't had a bad hair day since! Yes, my hair is a bit flatter than it would be without the cones, but it's not a terrible look for me since my hair is moderately thick to begin with. I hardly ever have to clarify and my hair doesn't have the heavy, weighed down feeling. I think this largely has to do with finding the right products. Pantene conditioners weighed my hair down like crazy, which I kinda liked, but it could get to be a bit much. My holy grail combination is an Herbal Essences conditioner (tousel me softly or totally twisted) and then Aveda Universal Styling Creme as a leave-in on sopping wet hair. Twist to dry or damp bun.

As a side note, I thought my hair hated protein too, but it turns out that it was also a matter of finding the right product. My Herbal Essences conditioners have protein in them, but they are fantastic conditioners!

So long story short, cones aren't bad at all, but not all cones are created equal. Like any beauty routine, it involves some trial and error and shopping. You might want to watch out for using cones as CO since it goes right on your scalp, but I think you'd notice if your scalp were reacting poorly. To be fair, I did CO for a while without cones and my shedding increased dramatically, so it didn't matter if I used cones or not on my scalp, it was just a no-go for me.

I thought my hair was very happy with sulfates until i started the CG method and am sulfate/cone free. Turns out my hair Loves it. Just play around with it and see what you like!
For me, since I only was once a week, the silkiness fades and my ends become crisp. And since I don't use sulfates there is the issue of buildup.

Adverts for hair products

I just saw the advert for elnet (no idea on spelling) heat protection products. There was smoke or steam or something coming from the hair they were styling!
At the end it says "worth it" on her heals. I sat there thinking no, not at all worth it. I think her hair was backcombed as well and since it's Cheryl Cole she probably has extensions (from what I've seen most long haired celebs have them).

So, what are the best and worst hair product adverts you have seen? Which ones made you cringe the most and did any of them make you want to buy the product?

I apologise if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to post the thread.

"Did you do that yourself?"

The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards - Powered by vBulletin

OKAY so I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this but I wanted see if other long haired ladddiiess experience the same stuff.
I work at a grocery store and every single day, no matter what I do with my hair, people ask me if I did it myself. They are always amazed.

Examples:

Hair in a loose french braid...

"Did you do that yourself?"

Hair in a bun with a hair stick...

"Did you do that yourself? Is that stick holding all your hair up?"

The best was when I wore a waterfall braid to work and costumers were physically grabbing me and spinning me around to show their shopping companions.

Among my fellow cashiers I have been dubbed The Braid Master. I think they're under the impression that woodland creatures fly in my window in the morning and attend to this stuff upon my scalp.

YUP. Any funny stories of amazed friends, family, or others?

Yup, same here. My hair is really not long, I'm about an inch from BSL, but I put it up every day (my own little challenge until the new year :-) ).
Every time I try something a little more complicated than a standard bun, I get these remarks. Even with a simple braid, so you can imagine when I try crown braids, or updo's that are a little bite more complicated.

I work for an airline, and the flight attendants are required to keep their hair together when it's longer than shoulderlength. Some girls do have gorgeous long hair, but most keep it in a very simple ponytail all the time. If you need to get up for work at 2am, I don't blame them
But every now and then, someone shows up with a gorgeous braid or fantastic updo, and then we happily exchange tips and tricks.

It's already started, and my hair barely brushes shoulder! Ear-to-ear headband braid, Gibson tuck, victory rolls... The receptionist at the doctor's office and lady at the deli counter always comment on my hair. --I'm a housewife.
I love the creativity I have with "longer" hair--I know it's not long, but after 15+ years with a pixie, it's as long as I've ever had it!

I'm excited about the new hairstyles I'll be able to twist it into as it gets longer!

The only time I've been asked that was this summer when I went to work with a crown braid. But they all asked that very same question

I work with horses so I always wear my hair in an english braid, nothing else will fit under my riding hat. I always get asked if I braid my own hair, quickly followed by 'how do you do that?' No one seems to believe that I can braid hair so long all by myself.

I don't do braids but often, when my hair is in a chignon, I'm asked "How long did it take you to style your hair?"

I also get the 'did you do that yourself?' quite often from my students. I usually say, 'No, my mom flew over 18 hours from the US this morning to do it...what do you think?' From the younger students I can understand (the first few times they ask), my mom or dad did my hair for school for me up to a certain age, and sometimes as a child it was hard to imagine ever being able to do some of the things my mom did with my hair as a kid, but the ones who are in high school should know by now that I don't have a teleporter so my mom can get to me Saturday morning before I go to work, nor do I wake up super early and go to a salon every day to get my hair done.
I get that too when someone sees me with my hair in a bun. Its a plain bun but it thrills people.
I miss my long hair.
I wouldn't mind a flock of hairstyling birds attending to my morning needs. Without their own brand of birdie conditioner. My routine is definitely not that natural.

I nearly never get asked if I did it myself or how it was done. Once in a blue moon I get "How long is your hair?", but that's about it. Alas! I must be "that weird guy with the bun".

ACV for dry scalp?

The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards - Powered by vBulletin

I have had a really dry scalp for about a month now. It isn't really flaky, just dry on the scalp area. I usually will oil my hair, and use castor oil on the scalp twice a week. I have tried to oil it again, but that didn't help. I read online that ACV might help, any opinions? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
aloe vera gel might help dear, have you tried coconut oil hot oil treatment also?
I used to have a terribly flaky scalp until I started rinsing with AVC every wash. It is worth a try. I will also oil my scalp with a light oil if it gets too dry and itchy, especially in the winter. I usually add a few drops of rosemary EOl to whatever oil I am using to help with shedding. I often to a mix of argan, castor and camellia on my scalp. After oiling, I always CO as that seems to remove the excess oil better than shampooing.
Enjoying my hair at this length and every length hereafter...

Ficcare never has anything in stock! What gives?

Have any of you had this experience? It seems like every time I go to order a Ficcare they are out of stock in whatever size/color I need. It is very frustrating. :/

I'm not sure why either. I finally got tired of constantly checking everything in every size/color that I just ordered mine from Nordstrom's.

I give up...accepting all bright ideas :)

I've always had long hair, and its never really given me any hassles.

This time last year, though, it was suddenly in a terrible state- thinning, breaking, split ends and ratty. I'd changed nothing in my routine [more on that below]

I trimmed a few inches off, and decided I'd spend 2012 maintaining it there to grow out the worst.

Well, its a year now... and while it is a little better and probably not breaking *as much*, the ends haven't thickend up much at all despite the microtrims and there still seems to be split ends everywhere despite a monthly s&d I've stuck to religiously.

So now I give up...anyone got a smart idea?

FYI, I don't blowdry [air dry only], wash once a week after a night of oil soaking, with a very mild shampoo and tried and trusted conditioner [haven't changed them in a decade] in cold water, SMT once a month, vinegar rinse as seems suitable and clarify likewise. I don't brush- wide toothed comb only, my comb is sandalwood and I've had it for years, and my hair is up almost all the time- I check my toys for damage possabilities.

Hence why I am stuck in puzzlement.

Begging for your help, LHC

The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards - Powered by vBulletin

My ends are splitting so much more than usual lately. It's driving me crazy. I can't figure out why. My scissors are sharp, I wear my hair up every day, I only wash once a week or so, I oil, I don't comb while wet or even touch it really, I sleep on satin pillows. I haven't changed anything, and I've never had a problem until now. My ends have been really dry lately, and now are splitting a lot. The only thing I can think is that it's still damaged hair from pre-LHC, and it's been dyed and bleached, but I'm not really sure why that would affect it now unless it's just because it's old plus that damage? How do I stop this from happening, what do I do? I was going to wait until classic to start trimming because that's where I wanted to maintain, but I won't reach classic until next September-ish. I don't know if I can wait that long to start trimming because of this. I don't really S&D all that often, should I do it more? I also haven't had an actual trim since January, and wanted to wait until this coming January before trimming again.
Thoughts? Any and all opinions and advice are welcome and appreciated.

depression and lack of healthy diets can do that too and yes cut the split ends or they will go through your length, i hope it's temporary and you it will be back fine..may be it needs protein treatment too?
Maybe you could start microtrimming, its been ? while since your last trim. And old damage and no trims for ? long time seem to be the cause of this. Better not to wait out too long on trims is my own experience. Good luck
It could be a combo of older hair that has been damaged plus it may have been what was forming durrng a stressful time or when you werent eating well ect... So the hair wasnt as strong as it should have been anyway. I have patches like that from when my health issues have flaired its fine wirey kinks easily and breaks/splits.
When my ends get like that I coconut oil them in addition to my usual leave-in.
HintOfMint is offline Member Join DateFeb 2010Posts2,189
Age gets to hair eventually, so that plus the preexisting damage might have done your ends in. I'm a big proponent of cutting over babying, but that's my own personal opinion from my own experiences. For me, damage travels up and no amount of babying stops that. You may try S&D if you have the patience.
I agree with the "old damage catching up to you" and the solution to "microtrim". My damaged hair is still growing out, it feels really soft and is no longer crunchy but it is still scarred by the damage I inflicted on it over two years ago with dyes and chemical/brazilian straightening. It has grown heaps in two years but until the damage is cut off (which I am doing gradually) it will remain more susceptible than the new growth I've had in that two years.
Once the damaged bits are gone the 'fresher' ends should not split like they are now unless you revert back to bad habits!

I agree with the above posters, but I don't know if there is another factor causing your splits. How long have you not trimmed your hair? You should make S&D a regular habit actually.
Possibly the drier weather? Is your hair longer than it's been for a while? You could just be at a length where your ends are getting all damagey from brushing your hips or something.
Maybe a good trim will help. Also, every time you wash your hair, let is soak in coconut oil at least half an hour, if possible two hours. I think this might help a great deal. Hope you figure it out

What to ask the Dr about hair thinning?

The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards - Powered by vBulletin

I have an appointment with my family doctor in two weeks and I'm going to bring up my hair thinning. Is there anything specific (question wise) I should ask her to look into or test?

The reason I'm going is actually about my chronically low body temp, but I suspect that it's all tied together (low iron, low ferritin, chronically cold, thinning hair). I'm thinking and endocrinologist is who I need to see first. My low iron could cause thinning, but low iron can also mask low thyroid issues which can affect hair as well. I also have very high estrogen (found out in my fertility treatments) which can cause hair loss. High estrogen is also a marker for hypothyroid and can block it showing on tests.

I know it's not genetic as everyone else in my family has thick hair both in the strand and in the volume of actual follicles/hair. My mother had waist length black hair for 20 years! Mine has just worse and worse since I was 18/19 and I've tried everything I can think of to make it better:

- went SLS free a year ago
- CO wash only started 2 months ago
- 1000mg Biotin daily for the last 3 months or so
- stopped almost all heat styling 6 months ago (except rarely for special occasions and just the blow dryer on warm)
- high protein/low carb diet for 3 years
- 3X the RDA of iron daily via liquid supplements (doctor recommended)
- oiling/treating hair weekly
- protective styling and braiding at night since at least the summer (but this more protect the ends and no so much helps with grown/scalp)

If there is anything I'm missing I should bring up, let me know! I really really suspect I have hidden thyroid issues that is the source of it all. Two of my sisters have low thyroid, as does my niece.

Yes, ask to be tested for PCOS.

A question for you: Are you taking vitamin A supplements? If so, they could be a factor or the factor in the hair loss you are experiencing.

I've already been tested for PCOS through my fertility testing and it was negative.

I'm not sure if you are saying I should have Vit A or I should not. But no, I'm not taking Vit A except the RDA in my pre-natal vitamins. It's not recommended to take Vit A supplements while trying to conceive as it can cause birth defects in larger doses.

I have been taking biotin for a few months and if anything, my hair is shedding much more than normal. I was taking them to try to deal with my terribly thin fingernails, but alas, it didn't help them either. I am thinking of stopping the biotin. My hair is also thinning, but it could either be my hormonal IUD, my throid meds, or just the fact that I am now 43. I am chronically low in B-12 and often have to get shots. My body temp. is a point lower than everyone else, and I have always had low blood pressure. When I gained a lot weight, it finally normalized, not a treatment plan I recommend... *sigh* I have no idea if I should even bring it up to my doctor because there are other more important issues that I am trying to deal with.

"Do all shampoo bars smell of soap?" and other shampoo bar related issues

I couldn't find a big shampoo bar discussion even thought google so I created a new thread to ask some specific questions.

I know shampoo bars are a soap based product but the soap smell is something I just cannot tolerate. Is there a way around that?

I'm hypersensitive to scents and have been using non-scented cone-free conditioners for CO washing for almost a year now and my hair loves it (mainly). What I don't love is the flatness I get in my hair from that. The hair is smooth as anything and I love that, but for a while I've been trying to look for alternatives that I could use to get even a little bit of volume.

So I bought a shampoo bar. The only kind that I could find in a shop was this one Finnish brand FLOW. I looked it up and found some mixed reviews but I thought I'd give a go anyway. The bar I got was "beer and egg" and it was aimed at giving volume to hair. The main ingredient is sodium cocoate. I disliked the smell in the shop already (there were a bunch of other smells too since it's one of those eco blah blah stores) but I figured that maybe the smell would disappear after thorough rinsing and ACV rince. It didn't. I figured it would go away after my hair had dried. It didn't. I had to braid my hair and every time I take the braid out I smell the soap. I can't take it for long. Soon i'll have to wash the smell off my hair. I can't really try and mask the soap smell with some essential oils as I can't stand even those smells every time my hair gets near my face. My hair needs to be scent free.

On the notion of what the shampoo bar wash did to my hair:
Maybe my hair has a little more volume but my hair wasn't as wavy as after CO washing when it had dried. Also for the first time since when I've used hairspray my hair was tangly after wash. The kind of sticky lank mess they said might be there after the first to the first 10 washes. I knew this could be something to expect but I'm not impressed. Is this something that really is normal for a good shampoo bar? Or is there better in store for me if I keep going with another brand? Am I just doomed and need to go back to CO washing?

If anyone has some suggestions to how to get volume to my hair in another way I'll be all ears too!

Buying BBB help

Hi all,
I've been perusing the internet for a good BBB brush (my hair is F/M but decently thick), but all the ones I can find that will ship to Canada are over 100 dollars. I have found lots of perfectly good ones on amazon.com but they won't ship to Canada. Does anyone know a good place to get them online (I live in a pretty isolated city up north), or is anyone selling one?

Thanks!!

Do you have any beauty supply outlets near your area? You could check there...or pharmacies/drug stores. You also might want to check out ebay Canada and see if there are any for sale there. Personally, if possible, look for your pure bbb in person, so you can feel the stiffness (or not) of the bristles. Not all bbbs are the same. Good luck!
Mason Pearson and other vendors that have .uk urls might ship to Canada. Good luck!
Have you tried beauty supply stores in your area. If none available do you have away to neighboring town to buy one.
I miss my long hair.

Christmas Comb Sale, Pt. 2

Two more combs added to the Christmas Comb Sale.

Please PM with your interests - I go on a “first come/first served” basis. It’s as fair as I’ve been able to make it. I do my best to make this as fair as humanly possible. I want everyone happy with their experiences here on LHC’s Swap Board.

Paypal is the preferred payment method and, as my special gift to you for this Holiday, shipping within the U.S. is FREE! I will consider international sales, but can’t mail them off for free and it has been my experience that there are often problems this time of year with the customs.

Please ask any questions you might have. Hope there’s something here that catches the eye and ignites the pocketbook! ;o)
----------------------------------------------------

#6 - This is an absolutely gorgeous blue and green flame style celluloid comb. It is in mint condition, all stones present, bright and sparkling - my pics do it no justice.

The comb is a perfect size for today’s styles - its beauty will draw attention to your amazing hair while not swallowing your style alive, as do some antique and vintage combs! You WILL love this comb!

5-?”T x 3”W $21

#7 - Sold to me as silver plate and it does have a maker’s mark: “B.Goreli” which can be seen in one of the pics. This is a sweet hand-punched comb that really fits well in your hair. It is missing one tooth, but that’s not too unusual for this style of comb. Otherwise, in need of a polish, if you are so inspired; or allow the patina to show its age.

3-?”T x 3”W $24
